This article explains myocardial infarction treatment, causes, and symptoms. It is another name for heart attack or, in more simple terms, death of the heart muscle. The heart is made of muscles; like other body muscles, it constantly needs oxygen and nutrients. It contains three coronary arteries, two primarily transport oxygenated blood to the heart muscles.
The heart may partially or wholly lack oxygen if the arteries become blocked. If it takes too long, the heart tissue dies, leading to a heart attack. In the event of a heart attack, the blood flow is seriously reduced. And the artery becomes entirely blocked, the pain is severe, and if prompt medical attention is not gotten, the heart muscle dies.
Myocardial infarction (heart attack) is often rooted in our daily choices, impacting our health over time. These choices include dietary habits and levels of physical activity. The primary causes are:
High cholesterol: High cholesterol, particularly LDL ("bad") cholesterol, can accumulate in artery walls, accumulating a deposit. This deposit narrows the arteries, restricting blood flow to the heart.
Obesity: Carrying excess weight around the abdomen will obstruct the heart and increase the risk of other heart disease factors like high blood pressure and diabetes.
Smoking: Smoking damages blood vessels and elevates blood pressure. It reduces oxygen supply to the heart and makes blood more likely to clot, significantly raising the risk of a heart attack.
Stress: Chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure, unhealthy coping mechanisms (like overeating or smoking), and increased irritants, all of which contribute to heart disease.
High blood pressure (hypertension): High blood pressure makes the heart work harder, thickening and stiffening the heart muscle. It also damages artery walls, making them more susceptible to plaque buildup.
Inactive lifestyle (sedentary lifestyle): Lack of regular physical activity weakens the heart muscle, increases the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, and reduces overall cardiovascular fitness.
Diabetes patients or people with a family history of heart disease are prone to a heart attack. Diabetes damages blood vessels and increases the risk of high cholesterol and blood pressure. A family history of heart disease may inherit genes that increase their risk.
Symptoms of a myocardial infarction (heart attack) can vary, but commonly include:
Chest pain: This is often described as a squeezing, tightness, or pressure sensation in the center or left side of the chest. It may come and go or be persistent.
Nausea: Heart attacks can trigger the nervous system, leading to feelings of nausea or vomiting.
Blurred vision: reduced blood flow can impact vision, and the body's reaction to the stress of a heart attack can cause blurred vision.
Dry mouth: The body's stress response during a heart attack can cause a dry mouth.
Dizziness and faintness: Reduced blood flow to the brain can cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting.
Feeling fullness in the chest, like heartburn, and pains in the jaw, neck, and back are more prevalent in women. While chest pain is the most common symptom, women are more likely to experience atypical symptoms, such as discomfort in the upper back, jaw, neck, or stomach. They may also describe a feeling of indigestion or heartburn. It is essential to know that these symptoms can also occur in men but are more often seen in women.
The options for myocardial infarction treatment are:
Conventional medicine and surgery
Advances in medicines and surgeries have brought about drugs and treatment of myocardial infarction, like open heart surgery. After the surgery, the patient may experience some pains, including constipation, problems sleeping well, and muscle pain. Still, they will go away after some time. Many of the drugs for prescriptions have upsetting consequences such as headache, vomiting, weakness and fatigue, blurred vision, or dry mouth.
Herbal treatment
The awareness of the use of herbal medicines for the treatment of myocardial infarction as opposed to the use of conventional medicine is further increasing, and nothing else informs this other than the efficacy of herbal medicines. These herbs can assist without the fear of side effects common to pharmaceutical drugs.
Examples are herbs like arjuna, garlic, fermented cabbage, pomegranate, billberry, green tea, and turmeric. Sesame seeds have qualities that could help prevent myocardial infarction.
Other alternative treatments
Other alternative treatments like homeopathy, acupuncture, massaging, and other physical therapies can also help reduce the risk of a heart attack. With solutions here and there, it is easy to forget that living healthy is the foremost answer to staying healthy.
The best treatment is taking preventive measures through a healthy lifestyle and maintaining good health through herbal supplements.
Be in charge of your health through healthy foods and exercise regularly. If need be drugs, embrace natural instead of conventional medications. Also, never forget that most heart attacks take hours, be proactive in seeking help if you suspect a heart attack is in progress. This way, you will still be counted among the living.
